Exercise Software Engineering

⦁ Provide a number of examples (both positive and negative) that indicate the impact of software on our society.

Positive:
1.   Reducing cost / number of staff needed
2.   Reducing amount of hardware (printers) due to LAN networking
3.   Fun – games, Internet, music, graphics
4.   Communication. More ways to interact globally
5.   Education – access to info for research
6.   Third world – cheaper to provide laptops than to send books over (OLPC, etc)

Negative:
1.   Hardcore porn industry (including child porn)
2.   Hackers, ID fraud and spoof websites
3.   Viruses, worms, spam and trojans
4.   Cyber-bullying and cyber-stalking
5.   People unable to interact ‘in person’
6.   Online gambling.

⦁ Is software engineering applicable when webApps are built? If so, how might it be modified to accommodate the unique characteristics of WebApps?

Most them can, but their application may require a somewhat different spin. But there are some argue that the application of software engineering principles (even if they are adapted to accommodate the unique characteristics of WebApps) is simply wrong-headed; that software engineering doesn’t really work very well in the rapid fire world of WebApp development.

⦁ As software becomes more persuasive, risks to the public (due to faulty programs) become an increasingly significant concern. Develop a doomsday but realistic scenario in which the failure of a computer program could do great harm (either economic or human)

News flash: Visitors to Google.com were stunned when the world’s dominant website returned a “404 Not Found” error for tens of millions of web searchers. All Google services – Gmail, Google Docs, AdSense – were inaccessible for periods ranging from hours to days, depending on users’ locations.

What could happen: Yahoo and Bing become swamped with search traffic, and might collapse under the weight. Organisations that rely on Gmail and Google Docs for their day-to-day operations will find themselves unable to get much done (though, given how many outages Gmail had over the last year, they might be used to it). YouTube fans may discover there are approximately 7,834 other free video sites out there. Web entrepreneurs who rely on Google ads will find themselves bereft of income for an unknown period of time.
